Quantifying the Effect of Rolling Dynamic Compaction
Dr. Mark Jaksa, University of Adelaide, Australia

Mark Jaksa is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has been an academic for more than 30 years, before which, he spent 4 years practicing as a consulting geotechnical and civil engineer in Adelaide and Canberra in Australia. He has a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering and a PhD, both from the University of Adelaide. He has published more than 170 papers, chapters and reports on various aspects of geotechnical engineering research and teaching. His primary areas of expertise are in the characterisation of the spatial variability of soils, probabilistic analyses, artificial intelligence, ground improvement, unsaturated soils and enhancing learning in geotechnical engineering. He has received several awards recognising his contributions to learning and teaching in geotechnical engineering. Mark is a former Chair of the Australian Geomechanics Society and immediate past Vice-President for Australasia and Treasurer of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He is also a past Chair of the ISSMGE’s Technical Committee, TC306, on Geo-engineering Education and a member of TC304, on Risk Assessment and Management.

Smart Energy Systems for Increasing the Energy Independence of Small Islands: Integrating Renewable Energies, Storage Systems and Sustainable Mobility
Dr. Davide Astiaso Garcia, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy

Davide Astiaso Garcia, PhD in Thermal Science, Energy Technology and Building Physics in 2011, is Assistant Professor of Thermal Sciences, Energy Technology and Building Physics at the Department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energy Engineering (DIAEE) of the Sapienza University of Rome. In 2017 he got the National Academic Qualification as Associate Professor in Thermal Science, Energy Technology and Building Physics (09C2). Furthermore, he is the Secretary General of the Italian Wind Energy Association (ANEV), and the Secretary General of Coordinamento FREE (Coordination of Renewable Sources and Energy Efficiency). His research activities at DIAEE started in 2006. He is currently involved in two H2020 projects GIFT - Geographical Islands FlexibiliTy - H2020-LC-SC3-2018-ES-SCC (BUILDING A LOW-CARBON, CLIMATE RESILIENT FUTURE: SECURE, CLEAN AND EFFICIENT ENERGY) Type of action: IA) and ODYSSEA (Operating a network of integrated observatory systems in the Mediterranean Sea; Type of Action: RIA), one EEA funded project (Youth Employment Network for Energy Sustainability in ISlands – YENESIS and one Erasums+ project (SIMULWIND - Maintenance simulator for the sustainability of European wind farms). He has scientific expertise in more than 15 national and international research projects (also as Project coordinator, Chair of the Steering Committee, Project Contact Person and WP leader) and he is author of more than 60 publications on journals and national and international congresses mainly concerning energy themes (44 publications indexed in Scopus. H index: 15 and 512 citations in Scopus database).

Effective High-Fidelity Nonlinear Analysis of Large-Scale Structure using Parallel Domain Decomposition
Dr. Bassam Izzuddin, Imperial College London, UK

Bassam Izzuddin is Professor of Computational Structural Mechanics and heads the CSM group at Imperial College London. Since joining Imperial in 1990, he has developed advanced nonlinear analysis methods for structures subject to extreme loading, and he has engaged in national/international collaborations with industry and fellow academics on applied structural engineering research utilising his program ADAPTIC. Besides major developments in detailed modelling, he has also developed a range of simplified analysis methods, which are currently being applied in design practice for offshore and building structures. His publication record exceeds 250 papers in leading international journals and conferences.

Prof. Rudolf Seracino, North Carolina State University, USA

Dr. Rudolf (Rudi) Seracino is a Professor of Structural Engineering and an Associate Head of the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University, USA. He earned his B.A.Sc. (Hons) and M.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada, and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Adelaide, Australia. His primary research interest over the past 20 years is related to the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in critical civil infrastructure. He is the Director of the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Integration of Composites into Infrastructure (CICI) at NC State University, and an elected Fellow of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC). He is on the editorial board of the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction and is a voting member of ACI Committee 440 on FRP Reinforcement.

Reducing Loads on Buried Pipes by Lightweight Backfilling Materials
Dr. Antonio Miglio, Hydraulic and Pipeline Consultant Engineer, Italy

Dr. Miglio is a hydraulic and pipeline consultant engineer, and currently he is the research manager and an instructor at the Center for Underground Infrastructure Research and Education (CUIRE), The University of Texas at Arlington, TX, USA. He earned his M.Sc. in Civil Engineering cum laude in 1999 and his Ph.D. in Hydraulic Engineering in 2005, both from the Università della Calabria, Italy. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Soil Conservation, Università della Calabria, Italy. Dr. Miglio has more than 10 years of professional experience in the field of structural design of buried pipes/culverts and hydraulic structures design. About the pipeline field, his areas of expertise include: structural design of pipelines, culverts and soil-steel composite bridges; analysis and modeling of soil-structure interaction of buried structures by 2D and 3D finite element method; pipeline material selection and pipeline installation; lightweight backfilling materials; pipelines and tanks tightness testing; damage degree classification of buried pipes; structural rehabilitation of drinking water mains and sewerage systems. He has been the project manager for operating in maintenance, repair and reconstruction of underground networks. He has been cofounder and partner of HYDRALAB Ingegneria, a professional engineering association operating in the design of hydraulic structures. Dr. Miglio has over 20 publications and he is active in various technical committees of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Transportation Research Board (TRB). He is also an Associate Editor of ASCE Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice and ASCE Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering. He was the recipient of the ASCE/EWRI 2017 Best Reviewer Award and he was selected by the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice as an ASCE Outstanding Reviewer in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
